Intended Uses of Depakote
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Depakote in 1983. The drug is an anticonvulsant primarily used to treat epilepsy, as well as patients with migraines and bipolar disorder. In rare cases, doctors have prescribed the drug to treat patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or chorea (a movement disorder). Although the drug is effective in treating these conditions, the manufacturer, Abbot Laboratories, failed to warn of potentially dangerous side effects.
Potential for Birth Defects
Depakote has now been linked with several serious birth defects, including:
- Cleft palate
- Heart defects
- Anencephaly, or underdeveloped brain or skull
- Defects of the neural tubes
- Spina bifida
- Hypoplasia, or underdevelopment of tissues or organs
Unfortunately, the FDA did not issue a warning regarding the potential for these dangerous defects until 2006. Studies showed that nearly 20 percent of women who took Depakote while pregnant gave birth to a child with defects. Additional warnings followed regarding specific defects and the heightened dangers associated with taking the drug during the first trimester.
Studies showed that nearly 20 percent of women who took Depakote while pregnant gave birth to a child with defects.
These defects can have a lifelong impact on a child. They can affect a child’s cognitive abilities, as well as his or her physical abilities. Additionally, the costs associated with caring for a child who has suffered from a birth defect are significant and ongoing. This can place an extreme financial burden on the parents.
