Zicam


The Food and Drug Administration has issued a statement saying that the public should not take Zicam nasal gel cold remedy because it can permanently damage the sense of smell. The condition is called anosmia. The report includes It has been widely reported that 800 reports have been filed with the manufacturers by Zicam users saying that they are losing their sense of smell. It has also been reported that in 2006 alone, $12 million has been paid out to settle 340 lawsuits of this nature. Hundreds more have since been filed. A compliance officer in the FDA, Dr. Charles E. Lee, said that zinc in the Zicam products can be toxic to nerve receptors in the nose. There is a history of zinc causing anosmia, going back to the 1930s. The FDA has recently sent a warning letter to Matrixx, the manufacturer, saying that the products "may pose a serious risk to consumers who use them" and urged the manufacturer to recall the over-the-counter nasal gel cold remedy products. As of June, 2009, the manufacturer has still refused a recall.
