Fatalities in Major Crash on Highway 287 near FM 407 in Wise County
Two people lost their lives following a motor vehicle crash on Thursday evening March 10, 2022, in Wise County. A woman driving an SUV in the southbound lanes of Highway 287 near FM 407 in the New Fairview area reportedly crossed over into northbound lanes causing a head-on collision reported to DFW Scanner.
The unidentified 36-year-old woman crossed over the median into the northbound lanes. While traveling the wrong way, her SUV struck a northbound traveling SUV head-on. Emergency responders including paramedics, police, and fire rescue responded to the scene to render aid and perform traffic control. The 36-year-old woman was rushed from the accident scene with critical injuries to the nearest trauma hospital. Unfortunately, she was pronounced deceased by the hospital staff. The driver of the northbound SUV was a 65-year-old man from Bowie. Unfortunately, he was pronounced deceased at the scene. The results of the crash impacted northbound and southbound lanes of traffic on Highway 287 for several hours.
The police continue to investigate this crash. It is currently unknown why the 36-year-old woman drove into opposite lanes of traffic. According to the Texas Commission for Vehicle Safety, some of the most common reasons for car crashes are as follows: distracted driving, drunk driving, inclement weather, night driving, and vehicle defects. Without further information, it is difficult to know for sure which of these alone or together would have contributed to the accident.
